Two Factor Authentication is an extra layer of security preventing unauthorized access to a user’s account. Silent Circle uses an authenticator method meaning a user will need a third party app for this purpose. Specifically, for Silent Circle accounts, the user will require a bar code reading app and an authenticator app. During set up, there will be ten back up codes offered. These are very important and should be copied and stored appropriately!
How Does It Work?
The two factors are basically what you know and what you have. A user will know a password and will have an authenticator. The authenticator is synchronized with a server and the server and the authenticator will produce a six digit code every 60 seconds. If the server and the authenticator app are synchronized, then the codes will be identical. That six digit code is applied after a correct password is input when accessing the user’s account. A hacker may be able to even guess a password but without a synchronized authentication code, the hacker will still not be able to access the account.
I lost my authenticator!!!!
Unfortunately, because the authenticator is specific to the end user, the support team cannot recover the code. There are ten back up codes provided during set up and these will greatly assist when an authenticator is lost. Without the back up codes, the account is lost. The solution at Silent Circle is for the end user to create a new account then provide the support team with the new account username, the old account username and the last four digits of the registered credit card for verification purposes and the support team can then transfer key data from the old account to the new.
